PROJECT OVERVIEW

FISS took the interaction between farmers and plantation fields to a new level through an environmental digital twin and an AI-based decision-support system. It connected existing technological subsystems, exchanged and analysed their data through a cyber-physical platform and returned practical recommendations to farmers.

The interfaces were designed for desktop and mobile use, with an augmented-reality display concept extending the system into the field.

Operational challenge

Intensive and ultra-intensive farms already use sensors, machinery and specialist services, but these assets often operate as separate subsystems. Farmers must interpret many unrelated data streams before deciding how to manage irrigation, crops, energy and field operations.

Engineering approach

The FISS cyber-physical platform combined an environmental digital twin with supervised machine learning and deep-learning techniques. The architecture was designed to scale from individual variables, such as water volume, to combined recommendations using weather, crop, soil-nutrient and energy data.

Results and legacy

FISS demonstrated a route towards complete digitalisation of the farming operational environment. The system supported more streamlined crop management, optimisation of operational and management procedures and AI-assisted recommendations suited to intensive almond and pistachio plantations.
